Chapter 12: The Alpha Arrives

Mira's POV

I didn't sleep.

At dawn I was waiting in the corridor outside the wardens' office with my arms crossed.

Bram came around the corner with grey under his eyes and stopped when he saw me.

He was exactly ten paces away.

"I heard you on the stairs," I said. "Every word."

He closed his eyes.

"Then you heard it from the wrong end."

"Tell me the right end."

"Not here."

"Here," I said. "In front of the door you keep locking."

He walked to me, and I did not back up.

"You heard the part that matters," he said quietly. "I swore on my mother's ashes that I'd kill the last of that blood, and I've carried the oath every day since."

"And I'm the last of that blood."

"I think so."

"So why am I alive?"

His hand came up and stopped an inch from my cheek.

"Because every time I look at you, I want to destroy whatever wants to hurt you," he said. "It's your face on the thing that killed my mother, and I would still tear any wolf off you with my hands. I hate that it's true. I hate that I want you more than I've ever wanted anything."

My throat hurt.

"You went out to the grove last night," I said.

"Yes."

"Did you finish it?"

"I couldn't say the end of it." His eyes held mine. "I'm not going to hurt you, Mira. If it costs me my wolf, I won't. I can't promise you I'll know what to do instead."
