Chapter 13: The Alpha's Answer

Lucan Thackwray did not blink.

"A fair question," he said, and the hall, which had gone quiet, started listening.

He let go of my hand and turned to face the tables.

"Eleven years ago I sat on the board of a children's home in the valley," he said. "A woman came through our pack infirmary with a sick child. I held her hand while the doctor worked."

He looked back at me, and his eyes were soft.

"Her hands were as warm as yours. People remember a thing like that. I'm sorry if I spoke out of turn."

It was a good answer.

It had a place and a reason in it, and the nearest tables nodded.

"Was that my mother?" I asked.

"I never learned her name," said Lucan. "I only remember the hands."

Across the table, Ilyan set down his glass.

"Alpha," he said, in his clear, pleasant voice. "I can't hear a lie, so I'll say this plainly. Every word you just said was true."

"Thank you, Mr. Greaves."

"It was also not the answer to her question."

A fork rang against a plate somewhere.

Lucan smiled at Ilyan and did not look worried at all.

"I'm always careful at a dinner table," he said. "Be careful with fae, Miss Quennell. They'll tell you the truth and let you walk into a wall."

Bram's arm tightened around my waist.
