Chapter 17: The Alpha's Table
The Alpha's private dining room had a long table, a roaring fire, and five places laid.
Lucan sat at one end.
Bram sat on my left with his jaw set, and Ilyan on my right, because Lucan had invited "the honest fae" and Ilyan had said yes without blinking.
Sabrina sat across from me in a pale blue dress with her bandaged wrist in her lap.
She had scrubbed the last of the archive from her face, and she poured my water herself.
"No hard feelings about last night," she said brightly. "I only did what I had to."
"Nice of you to say."
She slid her bag onto the empty chair beside her, a soft leather satchel with a pack ribbon tied to the clasp.
She opened it to take out a handkerchief.
Inside was a spare uniform tie, folded small, with a ribbon around it.
I had seen it before, on my first day, when she'd shown me the library.
I had not wondered why anybody would carry a spare tie.
Something under the table brushed my ankle.
A small, cool hand patted my shin twice and went away.
Posy, in shadow, where nobody could see her.
I kept my face still and reached for my bread.
The first course arrived.
Lucan talked about the Eclipse Moon, the old stone at the center of the hills, the four bloodlines that used to stand around it before the dragons were "lost."
Bram answered in two words at a time.
Sabrina laughed in the right places.
When the soup was cleared, Lucan stood to speak to a servant at the door.
