Chapter 18: First Fire
"You get that from your father."
I heard it all night, in the dark over my bed, until I gave up on sleep and went out at dawn to the sea cliffs behind the east wing.
Ilyan was already there.
He sat on a rock with his boots hanging over a long drop, and the wind pulled his silver-gold hair across his face.
"Teach me," I said.
"Teach you what?"
"How to stop it." I held out my hands, which were warm as always. "Every time I'm angry, the room gets hotter. At dinner a candle leaned toward me. If I'm going to stand in front of every bloodline at the Eclipse, I need to be able to make it quiet."
"And you want to make it loud, as well."
"Yes."
He smiled, with only half his mouth.
"Then you're more honest than most. Come here."
Posy had insisted on coming.
She sat on a boulder with her cardigan buttoned wrong, eating a bagel and not looking at me too hard.
"I don't know what you're about to do," she said. "But if there's a fireball, tell me early."
Ilyan stood me at the edge of the grass, ten paces from the drop.
"Fire is a decision," he said. "Think of something small. A room that is yours. Keep it small, and let the heat sit in the palm of one hand."
I thought of the group home's window, and the sill, and the cold January air that had never once felt cold.
My palm warmed.
A small gold flame stood up out of my skin, as tall as a thumb, and burned without hurting me.
Posy dropped her bagel.
