Chapter 20: The Check
"You didn't take the bus," Sabina said.
She stood in the dark corridor of the Night Heron with her fur over her arm and her phone against her chest.
"It's in my shoe," I said.
"Pity."
She turned the phone over, looked at the screen, and put it away.
"Mama has a better offer. She's making it herself, Monday, at ten."
"Why tell me?"
"Because I'd like to see you refuse her too."
She walked to the exit, then stopped at the door with her back to me.
"I wasn't going to show her the picture," she said, very low. "I'm not sure why."
Then she was gone.
I stood in the corridor with my heart doing something strange, and the wig suddenly very heavy on my head.
On Monday I rang the bell of the Pinckney house on South Battery.
The roof bucket was still in the hall, and it held two inches of rainwater.
Above the console table, where the family portrait had hung, the wallpaper was a square of brighter green.
They had sold it.
