The black lacquer frame hung in the foyer of the Palmetto Cotillion house, under a chandelier, exactly where Marcelline had said it would.
The photograph inside it was eighteen inches wide.
A platinum wig, a black lace mask, a bare shoulder, and a red velvet couch.
Beneath it, on a small engraved plaque, someone had put a name.
MISS ROSAMOND CABELL, OF THE ATLANTA CABELLS.
I stood in front of it in my white gown, with my pearls on, and a line of Charleston stacked up behind me to see.
Nobody said anything.
A great many people were saying nothing at once.
"I wondered whether she'd have the nerve," murmured a woman at my shoulder.
I turned.
She wore emerald, and her mouth was already shaped around a smile.
"I came for the dessert this time, madam," I said.
"I hope you'll try it."
She flinched.
Behind her, the front doors swung open, and the cold December air came in with a burst of laughter I knew.
