Chapter 14: Suspended
At six the next morning, Tanner stood at the chain-link fence beside the practice field with a cardboard box at his feet.
The box held his cleats, a towel, and a framed photo of his first start.
Rory had carried it out of the locker room himself.
"They changed the lock before I got there," Rory said. "I took your stuff out through the window."
"You climbed through a window?"
"I'm very flexible."
Tanner laughed, and it came out thin.
On the field, the offense lined up under the lights.
Shane stood behind the center in the number 12 jersey.
He took the snap, dropped back, and threw a wobbling pass that landed ten yards behind his receiver.
The whole line groaned.
"He rushes his feet," Tanner said, watching. "He's not bad. He just rushes."
"Why are you helping him?"
"I'm not."
