Chapter 15: Closed Doors
Elliot climbed the steps of the duplex at dusk with two bags and a paper sack of cinnamon rolls.
The landlady had pressed the sack into his hands at the bakery door.
"She said the men looked like lawyers," he told Tanner. "She said she hopes you eat more than cereal."
"I eat plenty."
"She watched you buy it. She counted."
Tanner took the bags from him and carried them in one-handed.
He had cleared a shelf in the hall closet and half the dresser in the bedroom.
The sheets were new, and the pizza box was gone.
"You cleaned," Elliot said.
"I panicked, mostly. Then I cleaned."
Elliot taped a sheet of paper to the refrigerator door.
It was a grid of sixty squares, with fifteen filled in.
"Day fifteen," he said. "Today you do your wall slides, your bands, and ice. Then dinner."
"And after dinner?"
Elliot turned around.
Tanner stood in the kitchen doorway with the last of the light on his face.
