Chapter 22: Boxes
Ruthanne had looked at the filing cabinet and at my bare legs and at Sam's lanyard.
"Lunch is at one, Thursday, both of you," she had said, and walked out with her sandwich.
That was Monday.
By Saturday Sam had two duffel bags, a toothbrush, and a new mattress, and I was kneeling on it in my socks.
The delivery men had left it in the middle of my bedroom floor with the plastic still on.
The frame lay in a flat cardboard box beside it, and the old bed stood in pieces against the hall wall.
Sam had come up my stairs at eleven in the morning with the bags over his shoulders.
He had set them down in my front room.
"This is everything," he said.
"That's it?"
"I am accustomed to carrying everything."
By noon, he had taken my old bed to the curb with a neighbor's help.
He cut the plastic off the new mattress with a kitchen knife.
By one it lay bare on the floor, white, with its tag still stapled to the corner.
The winter light came in sideways across it.
"Before the frame," I said.
"The instructions say..."
"Before the frame. Take your clothes off."
He took them off in the sunlit room, and folded them, which I still found moving, and set them on a duffel bag.
I took off mine and left them where they fell.
"Lie down on your back."
The bare mattress crackled under him.
It smelled of new foam and cardboard.
He stretched out on it, all pale length, with his arms by his sides and his cock already rising against his stomach.
I stood over him with my feet either side of his ribs.
I looked down at the man I lived with.
