Chapter 23: The First Gray Hair
"Slower," I said, and he slowed.
It was Sunday morning, the thirteenth of December, and we lay on top of the quilt with the curtains half open and the radiator knocking.
We had nowhere to go.
Sam had the day off, and I had a catalogue I was not going to touch.
The gray quiet city lay outside the window with its Sunday bells.
His mouth was on my stomach.
He had been kissing it for ten minutes, in tiny wet kisses, from my navel to the curve of my hip and back.
Each one was a sentence he meant to finish.
"That's good," I said. "Now lower. Slower than that."
He kissed lower, with his palms warm on my thighs, and slower.
He licked the crease where my leg meets my body, once, lightly, and I shivered and tugged at the quilt.
"You are not in a hurry," he murmured.
"No."
"Then I will not be."
His tongue slid over me, soft and unhurried.
It was a long flat lap that started at the bottom and ended at the top and made me sigh out loud.
He did it again.
He did it twenty times, I think, each stroke exactly the same.
The pleasure built like warm water filling a bath, until I was curling my toes and holding his shaved head in both hands.
"Stop," I said, breathless. "Stop. Come up here. I want you inside me."
He came up my body, kissing every inch of the way, and I put a hand on his chest.
"On your back first."
He lay back.
I knelt beside him and took him in my mouth, slowly, the way he had taken me.
He was hot and heavy on my tongue, and he made a low broken sound and laid his hand on my hair without pressing.
