Chapter 10: The Wrong Rate

Within two weeks the harbour started calling me again.

They did not call the villa. They called the bakery.

Pina answered the phone with flour to her elbows and passed the receiver across the counter with a raised eyebrow.

"It's the shipping line," she whispered. "They asked for Donna Marisa."

"Tell them I'm not the Donna."

"They say they will only talk to you."

The shipping line wanted to renegotiate a berth contract that had run for four years without a single complaint.

A supplier from Salerno wanted a new price, a new deadline and a new person to shout at.

Then the harbour master's office rang.

"Marisa," Gaetano said. "I'm sorry. I know you said you'd stay out of it."

"What's happened?"

"Nothing yet. The Fenice Group is arriving for the Posillipo gala on Saturday. They're the family's largest partner. Ilaria Fusco is sitting at the head table, in your seat."

"I'm not part of the family any more."

"I know. But I wanted you to hear it from me, not from a newspaper." He paused. "I have a table of my own at that gala. A guest of mine cancelled. If you came, no one would call you a Sarnelli. You'd be my guest."

I thought about it for the length of one breath.

I thought of the supplier from Salerno and the berth contract.

Then I thought about Ilaria in my chair, in my pearls.

"What time?" I said.

The Posillipo gala was held every autumn on the terrace of a grand hotel, with the whole bay lit up below.

Gaetano met me at the foot of the steps in a dark suit.

He looked me up and down once, quickly.

"You look good," he said.
