Chapter 9: Sprained

Tommaso's POV

By the time I got back to the villa, the doctor had already finished with Ilaria.

She lay on the sofa in the sunroom with her right arm in a blue sling.

Someone had called me at the law firm and said she had fallen on the pool terrace steps.

"It's only a sprain," the doctor told me in the hall. "No fracture. A few days of rest."

I thanked him and walked him to the door.

When I came back she was sitting up, her eyes red, and she held out her good hand.

I took it, because it was what you do.

"Did you really do it?" she asked. "The papers. With Marisa."

I stood there for a long time with the ring in my breast pocket.

"Yes."

Something crossed Ilaria's face very quickly. It was bright, and then it was hidden.

"Tommaso, this is wonderful," she said, and then she heard herself and softened her voice. "I mean, I'm so sorry. But you're free. You don't have to carry her any more."

I looked at her hand in mine.

"Can I ask you something?" Her voice dropped. "In those seven days, was there ever a single moment you saw me as your wife?"

The sunroom smelled of lilies. Someone had put them on the table by the window, and they were Marisa's favourite.

I realised I did not know who had bought them.

"Ilaria," I said. "You're tired."

"But was there?"

I didn't answer.

She waited, and then she turned her face to the cushion and began to cry quietly.

I let go of her hand and stood up.
