Chapter 17: The Owner
A security guard in a Stags polo found me before the boys finished their oranges.
"Mrs. Hartsell? The owner would like a word upstairs."
"I'll bet he would."
Dylan looked up from the cooler. "Is that her?"
"It's the man she's been talking to," I said. "Stay with Rhett. Stay with Griffin, if you want."
"I want," Dylan said, which I had not expected, and neither had he.
The owner's box had a carpet, a bar, and a glass wall over the field.
He sat at a round table in his shirtsleeves with a plate of cold shrimp.
He was a broad gray man who had owned the Stags for thirty years.
Bernadette sat across from him, with her cane laid on the table and a thin folder in front of her.
"Alana, come in," she said warmly, as if it were her box. "I was telling him how worried we've all been."
"She's been telling me you're unwell," the owner said. He didn't smile.
"Mrs. Hartsell, I run a football team. I don't take sides in a family."
