Chapter 18: The Doctor
He wouldn't come to the house, and he wouldn't come to a lawyer's office.
He said he would sit in the back booth of a diner on Wilkinson Boulevard at seven the next morning.
He said I should bring my husband.
"Why Griffin?" I asked.
"Because I only want to say it once," said the old man on the phone.
Griffin was already waiting in the parking lot when I pulled in.
I hadn't asked him to come early or to stand outside in the cold.
I did not tell him to go in first.
He held the door for me.
The doctor was in the corner booth under a faded picture of a lake.
He was a stooped man with a white mustache, a cardigan, and a cane hooked over the edge of the table.
A cup of coffee sat untouched in front of him, and under his hand lay a gray cardboard folder.
