Chapter 18: On the Pier

Hazel slept for fourteen hours in the Crown healer's cot, with her inhaler under her pillow and her hand in mine.

In the morning she ate two pancakes and said she wanted to watch.

"It's not a nice thing to watch," I told her.

"I was on the boat," she said. "I'd like to see how it ends."

So she stood beside me on the marina pier, wrapped in Torin's spare coat, while the Crown held court in the open air.

All of Redfern had come.

Behind them stood a hundred wolves from the other northern packs, packed along the boardwalk and up the hill.

A plain table had been set at the end of the pier.

Torin sat behind it with the old Alpha of the eastern packs on his right.

Felicity stood in front of them between two Crown guards, in the same gray scarf, dry now, and creased.

Her hair was neat.

She had taken the time to make it neat.

"Felicity Harcourt," Torin said. "The Crown has the harbor log, the cut fuel line and the inhaler. It needs nothing from you but your answer."

"I loved them both," said Felicity. Her eyes filled, on cue. "I never meant..."

Torin waited.

Nobody in the crowd moved.

Nobody handed her a tissue.

I watched her look from face to face along the pier, looking for the soft one, the nod she'd always found.

She didn't find it.

An old woman in the Redfern rows turned her back.

Then a man did, and then another, until a hundred people stood with their shoulders to her, and the tears dried on Felicity's face because there was no one left to cry for.
