Chapter 19: Terms, You Said

Hazel spent that night at the healer's house, where Jasper had talked her into a sleepover.

I drove up to Highcrest alone, because I had something to say, and I had decided to say it in person.

Torin was in the kitchen of the lodge with a mug he hadn't touched.

He looked up when I came in, and he didn't look surprised.

"Thirty-six days," I said. "I'm telling you now so nobody can say I didn't. I leave on the solstice, the way we agreed."

He put the mug down.

"Then go. Terms, you said."

"Torin."

"You wrote them yourself. A consort until the solstice, free on the morning, no questions." His jaw had gone tight. "I kept every one except the one I couldn't."

"The touching."

"The touching," he said. "And I'm not sorry at all."

"You hid the file for seven years."

"I did." He stood up, and he was suddenly very big in that small kitchen. "And you walked out of my study like I'd locked you in it."

"You had!"

"You looked at me in that corridor, with my feet bleeding on the tile, like I was safe." His voice cracked on the word. "And you wrote the terms the same week, and tonight you came up my drive to read me the date, like a bolted door. I've been standing on this side of it since."

I stared at him.

I had thought I was the only one counting.

"You think I kept to them because I wanted to?" I said. "I kept to them because if I didn't, I'd have asked you to stay."

"Then ask."

"You first."

"I can't," he said. "I won't be one more man asking you to stay."

"Then you're an idiot, Halvorsen."
