Chapter 13: The Offer
Seo-jin held the phone to his ear and said nothing at all.
"Gwak? I can hear you breathing," Hong Dae-seong said, pleasantly. "Good. Listen."
"Nine o'clock tonight, at your club. I'll bring supper and a few friends."
"And you will bring the boy. I have waited eighteen years to see his face."
"Nine," Seo-jin said. "My table. Six men, and not one gun."
Hong laughed, a warm round sound, and hung up.
The little blue room was silent.
Si-on looked at the photograph in Seo-jin's hands, at the dark thumbprint on the young man's neck.
"Son," he said.
"Yes."
"You said you'd tell me first."
"I am telling you first." Seo-jin set the frame on the table face down. "I saw that mark on his neck in a file. Then I saw it on your back, last night, in the lamp."
"And you said nothing."
"I said 'come here.' It was the worst thing I have ever said."
Si-on pushed the heels of his hands into his eyes.
"My father died on a boat before I was born. That's what she told me. Every year, on the day, she bought a fish and burned incense."
