Chapter 14: Shot
Hong Dae-seong walked out of Blackwater with his captains and his broken-handed envoy, and nobody stopped him.
A guest left a Gwak table on his own legs.
That was the rule, and Seo-jin kept it even now, with his jaw locked and one hand flat on the cloth.
The door swung shut.
"The house," Du-sik said. "Two of ours are down. The gate's burning."
"Back stairs," Seo-jin said. "Now."
He had Si-on by the upper arm before the word was finished, and he did not let go going down.
The back stairs came out in an alley behind the fish restaurant, narrow and wet.
The car stood at the far end with its lights off.
Du-sik went first.
Si-on saw the muzzle flash before he heard anything.
It came from the roof across the alley, white and small, and Du-sik spun and hit the brick with a grunt.
Then there was a second, and a third, and Seo-jin's whole weight slammed him into the wall.
"Down."
"Seo-jin, the roof..." Si-on said.
"Stay down."
The Devil's body covered his, long and hard against his back, and something hit that body with a flat wet sound.
Seo-jin made no noise at all.
He lifted his arm over Si-on's head and fired twice at the roof.
