Chapter 7: My Bed

Nobody had been in my bed except me and my ex-husband.

On Friday night, July 3, I stood in the bedroom doorway with a glass of wine.

I watched a twenty-two-year-old pool technician take his shoes off at the edge of the rug.

"Here?" he said.

"Here," I said.

"It's your bed."

"It's the bed I bought with Craig. I chose the mattress. He chose the headboard."

It was a tall oak headboard with vertical slats.

Craig had chosen it because it looked good in the listing photographs.

Nico stood at the foot of it, hands at his sides, in a clean white T-shirt that he had ironed.

I could tell it was ironed.

"I don't want to make you sleep in his place," he said.

"Come here."

He came.

I put the wine on the dresser and took his face in my hands.

"I've been married to that side of the bed for ten years," I said. "I want to burn it."

"Okay."

"Take your clothes off and lie down in the middle. Face up."

He undressed in the lamplight, folding each piece over the chair, and my chest went tight at the folding.

Then he lay down in the middle of the bed on the cream duvet, naked and already hard.

His arms were at his sides and his eyes were on the ceiling fan.

I stood at the foot and slid my sundress off my shoulders, and let it drop.

I climbed onto the bed on my hands and knees and crawled up between his legs.

He lifted his head.

"Not yet," I said. "Lie back. I'm going to start at the other end."

I turned around.

I lay on my stomach at the foot of the bed, with my face by his feet.

I had never in my life done this, and I did it anyway.

I took his right foot in both hands.

It was narrow and strong, with a high arch and a pale tan line from his sandals.

A tiny scar on the ankle.

I kissed the top of it.
