Chapter 8: Count

Craig did not come for his mail.

At seven that morning he texted that he was running behind and would stop by on the twenty-first.

I read it standing at the island with my first coffee, and I felt nothing at all, which was new.

At 9:40 on Tuesday, July 7, Nico came through the side gate and found me in the kitchen instead of the yard.

"The pool's done," he said, from the sliding door. "I shocked it early."

"Come inside," I said.

"My boots..." he said.

"Leave them," I said.

He left them on the mat and stepped onto my kitchen floor in his socks.

I watched him realize what I had planned.

I had spread a blue pool towel on the tile in front of the island, the big striped one, folded double.

The air conditioner was on high, and the tile was cool, and the whole house was quiet.

"On your knees," I said.

He knelt at the edge of the towel.

"No. On the floor, at my feet."

I sat on the edge of the island stool in a short silk robe, and I let it fall open.

"Take off my sandals. Then I want you to kiss your way up. Slowly. And I want you to tell me what you're doing."

He looked up.

"Out loud?" he said.

"Every kiss," I said.

His ears went red, and he swallowed.

He took my right sandal off by the heel and set it down.

He lifted my foot in both hands.

"I'm kissing your ankle," he said.
