Chapter 20: Halftime
The homecoming game against Harlan Falls was sold out, and every seat in Brantley Stadium was full by kickoff.
Cade threw three touchdowns before halftime, and the Bobcats led 21 to 7.
I did not see most of it.
I stood on the track by the end zone with my camera in my hands.
The principal's handwritten pass was in my pocket, and I kept my eyes on the press box.
Its glass was dark, and the door at the top of the stairs was locked.
Paisley had been inside since the second quarter, alone, with the only booth key.
My mother and Russ sat in the fourth row, side by side, with a thermos between them.
The State recruiter sat three rows above them in his gray jacket.
The booster president sat on the fifty-yard line in a good wool coat, smiling at nobody.
When the horn sounded for halftime, the band marched out and played a song I only half heard.
Then the principal walked to the center of the field, a stiff, heavyset man with his hands in his pockets.
