Chapter 21: Consequences
For a moment the stadium was completely dark.
Then thousands of phone lights came on at once, scattered across the stands.
"Stay where you are," the principal called, and for once nobody laughed at him.
In the glow I saw the tunnel entrance under the home bleachers.
A man in a good wool coat stood beside a gray metal box on the wall.
The door hanging open and his hand on the main switch.
He was the booster president.
A dozen phone lights found him at the same moment.
He froze, his hand still on the lever.
"I was checking the fuses," he said.
His voice echoed in the tunnel, and every phone was recording.
The school's police officer, a quiet woman in a navy jacket, walked up behind him from the dark.
"Sir, take your hand off that, please."
He did.
The principal came up the track at a heavy trot with the groundskeeper behind him.
The groundskeeper reached past the booster president, pushed the switch back up, and the stadium lights thundered on, one bank at a time.
