Chapter 7: The Empty Garden

Bev copied the whole TRAINING folder onto a thumb drive in Atlanta, in four minutes, while the bus idled behind the arena.

She put the drive in my palm and closed my fingers around it.

"Vaughn's going to say you stole it," she said.

"It's my voice."

"Then it's yours to carry."

I wore the drive on a chain under my shirt all day, next to the silver one my mother gave me.

At three in the morning I couldn't lie still anymore.

Fraser was awake too, on the other side of the curtain, with a hand on the fabric.

"Walk with me," he whispered.

Bev drove us in a golf cart to the arena stage door and unlocked it with a ring of keys.

"I'll be in the truck," she said. "I'll be asleep. I sleep very hard."

The arena was empty, and it was the biggest dark room I'd ever stood in.

A few work lights burned over the stage, and past the lip of it twenty thousand seats climbed away into the black.

I had never once seen this place from above the floor.

I walked out to centre stage in my boots and looked out, and my knees went weak.

"It's so big," I said.

"Aye."

"Is this what it looks like from here?"
