Chapter 26: Interview

I sat up in Aidan's bed with the quilt around me and the phone against my ear.

He was awake now.

He'd heard the word husband.

"Ms. Furlong?" the producer said. "Would you like to give us a statement? Anything at all. We'd air it right after her."

I looked out the window at my shop.

The sun was coming up on the gold letters.

"I'm a seamstress," I said. "I don't make statements. I make dresses."

"So that's a no comment?"

"That's a I have a fitting at ten."

I hung up.

Aidan was watching me from the pillow with his hair flat on one side.

"You're not going to fight her," he said.

"I fought her in my shop. I fought her mother at City Hall. I'm not going to fight her on a television in New York."

"So what are you going to do?"

"Go to work."

He thought about that.

Then he got out of bed and found his trousers.

"I'll make the coffee," he said. "You'll need it. Shauna's going to see you come out my door."

Shauna saw me come out his door.

She was on our top step with the keys at five to eight.
