Chapter 27: Refund

Nobody in the shop moved.

One of the mothers on the velvet sofa quietly took out her phone and held it up.

Gran didn't touch the garment bag.

She looked at it the way she'd looked at the Thorncroft check.

"Lauren," she said. "Your client."

I came out from behind the cutting table with the baby in her sling.

Madeline's eyes went to her.

Then away, fast, like she'd touched a stove.

"A copy," I said.

"You heard me. I designed that dress with a salon on Newbury Street. You copied it and sold it to me, and now you're selling the copy to every girl in Boston."

"And it's ruined."

"Look at it."

I unzipped the bag.

The ivory faille spilled out across the counter.

My great-grandmother's lace was torn at the left cuff, a clean three-inch slit.

There was a long red stain down the front of the skirt.

The brides on the sofa made a sound together.

I touched the stain with one finger.

"That's red wine," I said. "On a terrace, at sunset. I saw the picture. The sea looked lovely."
