Chapter 10: The Loss
Two men in federation windbreakers took me out through the loading dock.
They didn't touch me.
They walked on either side and they didn't have to.
Warren Stroud walked in front, with his phone at his ear and his back to me, saying, "Yes, yes, no, I have it handled."
At the dock a black car idled with its back door open.
"Get in, Ms. Dunmore," Warren said, and I did, because the other option was a scene in front of two thousand fans and a camera.
He got in the other side and shut the door.
The car pulled away from the stadium as the first roar of the anthem came through the walls.
"That was a disgrace," Warren said.
"A federation hallway.
A player in uniform, ten minutes from kickoff.
If a reporter had seen that."
"Nobody saw it but you."
"Nobody saw it yet."
He turned toward me.
"I told you this was a useful arrangement.
