Chapter 11: The Long Night

Bram climbed through the window.

He landed on the carpet and straightened, and the room got smaller.

Right behind him came a second set of hands on the sill.

Then a head of blond curls appeared, and a very out-of-breath voice said, "Don't pull the curtain, I'm stuck."

I helped Dex through by his belt.

He fell on the floor and lay there.

"I'm going to be sick," he said.

"It's two floors," Bram said.

"It's two floors with a guard on the ground and a drainpipe that moves."

"You're alive."

"Barely."

"We lost," I said.

"We lost," Bram said.

"I let in three."

He stood in the middle of the room with his notebook in his hand.

His face was the saddest thing I had ever seen.

"I wrote it all down on the bus.

I had one line.

I wrote, I played badly because I was thinking about her.

And I want you to know it wasn't your fault."

"Bram."

"It was mine.

I thought about you in the hallway.

I thought about you the whole game, and I let a ball past me, and I haven't."

"Bram.

Come here."

He came.

I took the notebook out of his hand and put it on the bedside table.

I put both my arms around his waist as far as they would go.

He folded around me.

He put his face in my hair and made a low sound, and his whole big body shook.

I felt the other bed dip.

Dex had crawled up on it and sat there on the edge, with his curls in his eyes, watching us without a single joke.
