Chapter 10: My Father's Study

Gavin's POV

My father lives on the lake in a stone house with a lawn that slopes to the water.

I let myself in with my own key at ten in the morning.

He was in the study with a cup of tea and the Sunday papers.

He did not look up.

"I wondered how long it would take her to show you the book," he said.

I put the notebook down on his desk.

"You knew about it."

"I have known what she is for six years."

"Since the week she was hired."

"Since the day her application reached my desk." He turned a page. "I read the file on every applicant who has her name. Brennan is not a common name in my building, Gavin."

"You hired her anyway."

"I wanted to see what a girl of twenty-two would try."

I stood there in my coat.

I realized I had never once seen my father do anything by accident.

"You let her sit outside my office for five years," I said.

"I let her sit outside your office for five years and watched my son fall in love with the daughter of a man I had ruined. It was the most interesting thing I had seen in a decade."

"You ruined her father."

"I bought his shop at a fair discount."

"Two and a half million under the appraisal."

"The appraisal was a number somebody wrote down," my father said. "A man in his position needed money in thirty days. I was the only buyer who gave him thirty."

"You called his loans first."
