Chapter 9: What She Wrote

Hazel's POV

I had thought for six years about the day Gavin would read it.

In every version, I had time to prepare.

In this one, I was standing in the hall in my coat with the door open behind me and the cold coming in.

"Was any of it real?" he said again.

"Close the door."

"Answer me."

I shut the door.

"The first page is true," I said. "I wrote it the day I was hired. I was twenty-two. My father was dead and your father's name was the only thing I had left to hold."

"Get close to the son."

"Yes."

"Make him love me."

"Yes."

He looked down at the page.

"And did you?"

"Yes. Not the way I wrote it."

"What does that mean?"

"It means you brought me soup, Gavin."

He didn't laugh.

I watched a muscle move in his jaw.

"You married me," he said. "You said yes in a courthouse. Was that part of the plan?"

"At the start."

"At the start."

"By the time you asked, I was on the fifth page and I was lying to myself. I said yes because I loved you. I wrote down that I'd be sorry later. I was never sorry."

"But you never told me."

"You were hiding me from your father. I was hiding a notebook from you. I thought we were even."

His voice rose for the first time.

"We were not even. I was protecting you."
