Chapter 13: Faye
I sat in Jesse's truck with my mother's face in my hands until the porch light clicked off.
Jesse came out at four and found me there.
"It's my mother," I said.
"Then go," he said. "I've got Bud."
I wrapped the plate back up and drove across the river with it on my knee.
It was ten to six when I let myself in my parents' kitchen door.
Daddy was already out back with a flashlight, on his knees in the tomato bed.
It was his day off, and he'd never slept past five in his life.
Mom stood at the stove in her housecoat, starting the coffee.
I put the handkerchief on the kitchen table and opened it.
Mom looked at it from across the room.
She turned off the burner.
Then she sat down across from me and put on her reading glasses, the way she did for the light bill.
She didn't touch the glass.
"Where was it?" she said.
"In her tower. In a box with the others."
"Mom."
"My name was Faye," she said.
"I was the widow's girl, on Pickett Street. Her only one."
