Chapter 14: If a Picture Took Them
Mom wrapped the handkerchief around the plate and stood up with it held against her chest.
"Stay here," she told me, and I followed her out anyway.
Miss Eugenia stepped back down the steps to make room for her.
The chief leaned on the silver car in the drive with his arms folded.
Across the street, our neighbor stopped halfway down his walk with his newspaper.
"You've gotten old, Faye," Miss Eugenia said.
"I got to," Mom said. "Nobody in your box did."
"Give me the glass, and I'll leave your girl alone."
"You have one of my girls in your pocket."
Miss Eugenia smiled, and her hand went flat over her right pocket.
My left hand burned so hard I had to hold it against my leg.
"I've let you be for thirty years," Miss Eugenia said. "Sunday after Sunday, in my church."
"You let me be because I never sat down."
"Brother," Miss Eugenia said, "get my property."
The chief came off the car.
"Go ahead," I said. "The judge told you to think hard, Chief. Two neighbors are watching you think."
