Chapter 18: Margaret's Bargain
"Do you want me to send her away?" Holden asked.
On the little screen, Margaret smiled patiently into the camera.
"No," I said. "Let her come up."
Mei put down her pineapple bun. "I'm staying."
"I know you are."
"I'm going to stand by the knives."
"Don't stand by the knives."
"I'm going to stand near the knives."
Holden pressed the button. Down at the bottom of the drive, the gate swung open.
Two minutes later Margaret Zhang walked into my kitchen in a cream suit and her pearls.
Her driver stacked the boxes on the island until they made a wall of red and gold paper.
"Thank you," she said, and the driver went back out to the car.
Margaret looked around.
At Mei by the knife block in her overalls.
At Holden, in an old T-shirt and jeans, leaning on the counter with his coffee.
At me, barefoot, with the ring on my finger.
"What a beautiful home," she said.
"Thank you."
"I won't stay long. I came to apologize." She folded her hands in front of her. "Last night was a terrible misunderstanding. I was misinformed. Vanessa told me things I believed, and I should not have."
