Chapter 19: The River
Nobody in my kitchen said anything for a long moment.
The fridge hummed. Out on the water, a ferry blew its horn.
Margaret stood in my hallway with her handbag on her arm, waiting to watch me break.
"Get out of my house," Holden said.
He didn't raise his voice. He didn't have to.
Margaret lifted her chin and walked out, and the front door shut behind her with a soft, expensive click.
Mei shook her head. "Lena."
I was already putting on my shoes.
"Where are you going?" Holden said.
"To ask him."
"I'll drive you."
"No." I picked up my keys. "This one's mine."
He looked at me for one second, then took his own keys out of the bowl and put them in his pocket anyway.
"Then I'll be at the gate when you get back," he said.
The Riverside presentation centre had balloons tied to its doors.
A sign on an easel said OPEN HOUSE SATURDAY, and the parking lot was full of buyers who'd come to look at their future kitchens.
Behind the glass box, the tower stood gray in the drizzle.
