Chapter 16: Cost
Eli's POV
Louisa took the clinic's call sitting up in my bed with the sheet tucked under her arms.
I lay next to her and listened to one side of it.
"Yes," she said. "Yes, I know. No, I didn't do anything. I'm so sorry."
She listened for a long time.
Her free hand had gone white around the phone.
When she hung up she stared at the wall.
"Forty threats on the clinic's voicemail," she said. "Somebody wrote *stalker* on the front window in marker. My boss wants me to call her back after lunch."
"That's mine," I said.
"Eli."
"It's mine. I wrote the check to the man with the camera. I'll fix it."
"Don't fix it for me."
"I'm not." I sat up. "I'm fixing it because it's the right size. You said everything in the open, so I'm telling you first. I'm going to the label this morning. I'm cancelling the T. campaign, I'm putting your name on the song, and I'm saying the truth where people can hear it."
She turned her head and looked at me.
"What does putting my name on the song mean?"
"Writer credit. Half of everything it has earned and will earn."
"I can't take that."
"You wrote the words," I said. "I put a tune under them. I've been paid for four years for sentences you wrote on a kitchen table in Ohio."
She didn't say yes.
She said, "Do it where I can see it."
At eleven I stood in a conference room on the ninth floor of the label's Madrid office, with the president of the company at one end of a glass table and the woman in the gray suit at the other.
