Chapter 13: The Last Moonwarden
Rafe and I dressed fast in the morning light and went out across the frost together.
The stones were still burning white, and the whole meadow was silent.
Dorian Falkner did not look up when we reached him.
He was on one knee in front of the tallest stone with the rolled map spread flat on the snow, and a pencil behind his ear.
"Eleven years I've read these treaty maps," he said. "Every one of them has this script in the margins. Nobody I ever met could tell me what it said."
"And now?" Rafe asked.
"Now I've got a stone that says it out loud." Dorian put his finger under the first line. "Where the Warden stands, the ground is held."
I stood very still.
"Go on," I said.

"The Warden's line wears the moon in silver.
"The Warden's line takes no wolf, and it does not need one."
He looked up at last, and his pale eyes went straight to my throat.
"Your locket," he said. "May I?"
I took it off and put it in his palm.
He turned it over once and nodded.
"Moon-silver. It's warm because it knows its own blood, Ms. Averill. It has been warm against you since the day you first put it on."
"I blamed the metal," I said.
It came out of me almost as a laugh.
Rafe's hand found the small of my back and stayed there.
"My father used to say a keeper would come home one day," he said. "I was twelve. I thought he meant a dog."
