Chapter 14: Not in a Lobby
Rafe's POV
The council was waiting for me in the lodge hall at noon, a semicircle of chairs and one empty seat for me in the middle.
I stayed on my feet.
Ward had a paper ready, because Ward always had a paper.
"Last night's display changes nothing about the pack's business," he said. "Brynn is named. The Luna seat is filled. You'll stand beside her at the Gathering and say so."
"Where is she?" I asked.
"Indisposed."
"She was shaking in that meadow."
"She was cold," Ward said.
I looked down the row of faces.
The thin elder was studying her knees, and two of the others would not meet my eye.
"I named Brynn Standish with a list of fourteen names in my pocket," I said. "I named her to keep those people alive. The list is read. Everyone in this pack knows what it was."
"And the old law stands," said Ward.
"Then use it. Vote on the censure."
He stared.
"I withdraw the naming," I said. "Brynn is not my Luna, and she never was. I'm not asking the council's leave to say so."
The heavy elder drew a breath, and the thin one's head came up.
"You'll lose the seat," Ward said, very low.
"Then I lose it."
I had thought it would be harder.
It was like putting down a pack I had been carrying so long I had stopped feeling the straps.
I walked out past the council, and nobody stopped me.
I drove up to Aspen Hollow with the window cracked and the cold on my face.
