Chapter 19: Bridget's Offer

Jonas's POV

Four nights before the roof, I had the east wall from midnight to six.

The Anchor slept below me in rows of cots.

I walked the parapet with my axe and counted the dead on the river road.

Nineteen.

I was on the twentieth when I heard soft steps behind me.

"Don't swing," Bridget said. "I brought coffee."

She stood at the top of the ladder in a gray sweater with two tin mugs.

She looked as if she had not slept since September.

"I don't drink what you bring," I said.

"Fair." She drank from one mug, to show me, and held out the other. "I'm not here for her. I'm here for you."

"Say it fast."

"I died, Jonas."

She said it flat, with her eyes on the river road.

"When the Anchor fell," she said, "on day fifty-three. Something got me on the stairs. I woke up in my own bed on the twentieth of September. I thought, it's a second chance."

"You thought it was a second chance for you."

"Yes." She did not flinch. "And I did what I did last time. I held her hand. Because I was afraid of Keaton, and I'm still afraid of Keaton, and I thought if I kept her calm it would be quick."

"It wasn't."

"No." Her voice cracked. "I hear her every night. I hear the whole roof."

I put the axe against the parapet.

"What do you want?"

"Three things."
