Reese's POV

On the morning of the twenty-fourth of November, I walked up the stairs to the roof on my own feet.

Nobody had tied my wrists.

Jonas stood at the door on the fourth landing in a clean flannel with every button done.

He did not say good luck.

He took my right wrist and held it for a moment, with his thumb on my pulse.

"Six o'clock," he said, low. "The tower's ours."

"I know."

"If it goes wrong, you look for me."

"I'll look for you."

He let go.

I stepped out into the cold light.

It was the same roof.

The same supply table, bolted to the concrete, with its legs freshly painted.

The same two hundred faces, in rows, with their breath smoking in the air.

I found my mother at the front, with Ray's arm around her shoulders and my stepsister's hand in hers.

My mother nodded once.

The captain stood at the table with his rifle slung over his shoulder.

Keaton waited beside him in his good shirt and a gray scarf wound twice around his throat.

Bridget stood at his elbow, small and still, with her hands folded.

She did not look at me.

"Friends," the captain said, and the roof went quiet. "A month ago some of you did not believe what was coming. Today we ask something of one person, and she has agreed to give it."
