Chapter 10: The Register

Gianluca sat up and took the card out of Lucrezia's hand.

He read it twice, then turned it over and read the back.

I pulled the striped cushion over my chest and said nothing.

"Where did you find this?" he asked.

"On her cot," Lucrezia said. "I went to wake her for breakfast. It was under her pillow, in the open."

"The Don's maids made that bed."

"Then they'd know."

"I've never seen it," I said. "I didn't write it."

"Of course you didn't," Lucrezia said, so gently that it hurt. "I just thought he should know what you wrote."

Gianluca folded the card once and put it in his shirt pocket.

"Thank you," he said. "Now go back to your room."

She looked from him to me and back again, and for one small moment the soft look slipped.

Then she smiled and went.

I got dressed in front of him with my back turned, and neither of us spoke.

"You believe it?" I asked at the door.

"I believe it was in my hand a minute ago and it wasn't in yours."

"That isn't an answer."

"It's what I have until tonight."

The dinner that night was laid for eighty, with white flowers down the center of the table.

The Don sat at the head, with his son on his right and Lucrezia on his left. I had been put at the far end, between a cousin and a woman who would not look at me.

My father was across from me, with a leather folder under his hand.

My mother sat beside him in a dark blue dress, upright and pale. Tommy slouched next to her, looking at his plate.

Tommy had not lifted his eyes to me once since we sat down.

When the soup was cleared, my father stood and tapped his glass.
