Chapter 9: The Pool House

I picked up the slipper and held it in my fist.

I could have gone to Lucrezia's door and thrown it at her.

I went out into the garden instead, because my room off the kitchen had a cot and a window onto the trash, and I could not lie in it with my face still hot.

The pool house sat at the far end of the lawn, white and dark and open on one side.

Inside there was a daybed with a striped cushion, a stack of folded towels and the pool's blue light moving over the ceiling.

I sat down on the edge of the bed and put the slipper on the floor.

Footsteps came across the grass.

I knew them. I did not turn around.

"I was wrong," Gianluca said from the doorway.

"About what?"

"The word."

"Which one?"

"Convenient." He stayed where he was, with the light behind him. "I said it because I was afraid you'd written the fourth card. I wanted you not to have."

"And now?"

"Now I don't know who wrote it. I know who I'd rather it hadn't been."

I stood up.

"Say that part again."

"I know which of you I want."

The pool water slapped against the tile.

I crossed the little room until there was no room left to cross.

"Is this convenient?" I asked.

"Nothing about this is convenient."

"Good."

I took the front of his jacket in both hands and pulled him down to me.

He kissed me hard, with a week of held-back anger in it.

It was slow for about two breaths. Then his hand slid into my hair and the braid came apart, and it stopped being slow.
