Chapter 13: The Warm Hand
He let go of my hand and laid his own back on his chest, where it had lived for thirty years.
"Come up to my rooms after supper, Silver," he said, loud enough for the walls. "The Chair likes to know its new votes."
The yard cheered him for that.
I went up after supper because there was nowhere in Aldenbrug I could go where he couldn't send for me.
The Guildmaster's rooms are over the guild hall, up a stair behind the Gold table.
There was a fire, a long table with nothing on it, and two chairs.
He was sitting in one of them with his left hand on his chest and his right in its black glove.
"Sit down, Liesbet," he said. "You've had a long day, and I've had a long life."
I didn't sit.
"You felt it," he said. "I watched your face."
"Your hand is warm."
"It always has been."
He said it the way another man would say he'd been born left-handed.
"My mother felt it the day I was born," he said. "She was a tanner's wife, and she'd buried two sons below."
