Chapter 14: His Hand Is Warm

I didn't answer him.

I went down through the empty hall and out into the square, and I made myself walk.

My party was on the top step of the Mouth between the braziers, the way it was every night now.

Daan was telling the cordless healers a story about our father, and they were laughing.

He looked up and saw my face and stopped.

"If a Gold comes to you with a call," I said, "you come and find me before you go anywhere."

"A call can't be refused," Daan said.

"I know. Find me anyway."

He frowned, but he nodded.

Joris was standing on the far side of the Mouth, by himself, as the Gold on watch.

I walked around the stair and stopped in front of him.

"I'm on watch," he said.

"Daan can hold it for an hour," I said. "Come and read something."

"After that you never have to talk to me again."

He looked at me for a long moment.

Then he came.

The infirmary was dark except for the stove.

I lit the lamp on the wall and took it down to bed seven.

"Lie down," I said.

He didn't move.
