Chapter 7: Strip Pit Ice
The strip pit froze in the third week of December, a black-green sheet a foot thick with the culm bank rising behind it.
The twins ran the pack across it every morning before light.
They had made a game of it, a race to the far bank and back, with the girl's border collie as referee.
The dog would not let either one cross the line first.
"You cheated," said the younger one.
"You can't count," said the elder.
"Count what?"
"Anything!"
The diver broke ice for the foreman's swimming lesson.
He was seventy-three and would not shift in cold water.
She put a bare foot on his shoulder and told him he could shift or freeze.
He shifted, swearing in three languages.
The bartender kept the tally on a board nailed to the church hall wall.
Forty wolves by Christmas.
I stood on the bank with a thermos, watching them.
It was the happiest I had been in months.
I had a bruise at the side of my throat, just under the jaw, where a careful mouth had been the night before.
I had not covered it, and I did not care.
