Chapter 8: The Shovel

The Epiphany blessing at St. Michael's falls on the sixth of January, and every pack in the county sends someone to hear the priest bless the water and the chalk.

The church hall that afternoon held two hundred.

The Black Diamond delegation sat in the front rows, in black.

Ilona Baran sat among them in church gloves, with her written filing to the Crown folded in her lap.

I stood at the back with the Culm Bank pack in a line along the wall, forty wolves in their winter coats.

The foreman had his lunch pail.

The priest blessed the water.

He blessed the chalk.

He blessed the two hundred in the hall, in two languages, and then he said mildly, in English, "I understand there is a matter of a shovel."

Ilona rose and walked to the front.

"I do not wish to make a scene," she said.

"By the Crown's own statute, a tool of the Gamma's office is the pack's property, held in trust.

"Jozef Dzurenda's shovel hung in the Black Diamond hall for thirty years.

"It was taken from the wall without leave.

"I ask the priest, as witness, that it be returned."

The hall hushed, and I saw the heads turn.

I stepped out from the line along the wall with the shovel in my hand.

I had not been separated from it since September.
