Chapter 9: Three Gray Stones

Tomas's POV

My father called the Crown on her at the supper table, between the soup and the roast.

He did it with his napkin tucked in his collar, in front of my mother and Peter and the two cousins from Hazleton.

"Ilona has written to the arbiter's office," he said.

"A tool of the office is the pack's.

"We will have the shovel back by Easter."

I put down my spoon.

"She was twelve when she carried her mother out of that house," I said.

"Eat your soup," my father said.

I did not eat it.

I watched my mother cut her meat into small, even squares, and I understood that she was not going to look up.

She had not looked at me since September.

I drove to the cemetery at three in the morning.

The snow was ankle deep on the hill road, and the headlights found nothing but black stones standing in white.

I parked at the bottom and walked up.

I had a small gray rock in my coat pocket, from the strip-pit bank.

I do this once a month, and I have done it for two years, since the week her father fell sick.
