Chapter 16: The Porch
Odile's POV
"Term four," I said.
He had crossed the churchyard and stopped at the bottom of the hall steps, with his hat in his hand.
I stood in the lit doorway above him, and the empty table stood behind me.
"You fix nothing of mine without asking."
"I know," Seb said.
"I got to the twentieth envelope and I knew."
"You didn't stop," I said.
"No."
"You didn't ask the priest to send for me.
"You didn't wait a day."
"No," he said.
"I gave the order and I carried it out.
"I won't say it was small."
I looked at him, at his clean hard face in the yellow light and the hat in both his hands.
I wanted to be furious.
I had a whole speech about a man who decided what was good for a woman while she slept in the next building.
But forty farmers had signed a list.
"So much for term four," I said.
"Yes," he said.
"You paid them out of your own account."
"Yes."
"Did you think about me at all?" I said.
"The whole time," Seb said.
"That's the trouble."
He said it with such flat honesty that I laughed.
It came out wrong, half a sob.
"Come here," I said.
"Into the kitchen.
"Now."
The hall had a big institutional kitchen at the back, with a steel counter the length of a pew and a row of pots hanging from hooks.
I pulled him in by his belt and turned the lock on the swinging door.
The lights buzzed.
I put my hand flat on his chest and pushed him back until he leaned against the steel counter.
"You don't get to be forgiven," I said.
"I know," he said.
"You get to be told what to do."
"Yes, ma'am," he said.
"Take off your jacket," I said.
He took it off.
"Shirt," I said.
He unbuttoned it with steady hands and let it drop.
