Chapter 17: Supper
He asked me on a Tuesday, in daylight, in the parish hall parking lot, with his hat in his hand.
"Odile," Seb said.
"Will you have supper with me on Friday?
"In Lafayette.
"At a table, with a menu, where I pay.
"You can say no."
I had been looking at a flat tire on my father's truck, and I put the jack down.
It was noon.
Four trucks were parked within earshot, and a woman was watering the altar flowers on the church steps with an expression of perfect blankness.
"Why Lafayette?" I said.
"Nobody there has an opinion about us yet," he said.
"Is that why?"
"That's one reason.
"The other is that I'd like to watch you eat something I didn't cook."
I wiped my hands on a rag.
I had not cried since the lawn.
I had slept four nights in the room above the hall and played at midnight, and he had not come up the loft stair once.
"Yes," I said.
"Pick me up at six."
His face did a thing I would have paid money to see again.
"Yes, ma'am," he said, and put on his hat.
The crawfish house sat on a bayou outside Lafayette, a long tin-roofed shack with a screened porch and newspaper on the tables.
He had picked it, and I understood why when we walked in.
Nobody in that room had ever heard of the War God.
A waitress in a Saints jersey sat us in a booth at the back and brought two beers without asking, and a tray of boiled crawfish.
Seb looked at it.
"You peel them," I said.
"Like this."
I showed him.
He watched my hands with the same grave attention he had given the dance, and tried one, and the tail went across the table and into my lap.
I laughed so hard the people at the next booth turned around.
