Chapter 31: The Album
Marigold looked up at Clive in the doorway, barefoot, in his jeans, and then past him at me, in a blanket.
She didn't make a face. She didn't make anything.
"I'm not staying," she said. "I just didn't want to leave it on the mat and run."
Clive looked back at me.
I nodded.
He picked up his shirt and his shoes from the rug and kissed my temple on the way past.
"Thames Street," he said. "Coffee. Call me."
He went down the stairs past my sister, sideways, so they didn't touch.
She watched him go all the way down.
Then she stood up, picked up the album, and came in.
She stopped in my kitchen, the way he had in July, and looked around it.
"You never changed anything," she said.
"Why would I?"
She set the album on the yellow table.
"I didn't know where else to put it," she said. "I can't throw it out. I paid eleven thousand dollars for it."
I sat down across from her.
She didn't sit.
"Open it," she said.
I opened it.
The first page was the tent at golden hour, white and gold, three hundred people with their glasses up.
