Chapter 32: The Rooftop
I unfolded the coffee filter.
There was no diamond in it.
There was a thin gold band, worn smooth on one side, a little out of round.
I looked across the table at his mother.
She had her left hand in her lap. The finger was bare. There was a pale line where the ring had been for forty years.
"His father bought it at a pawnshop on Eastern Avenue," she said. "Twelve dollars. I'm told you like things that are paid for."
I couldn't say anything for a moment.
Clive stood beside my chair, not touching me.
He didn't say a word. He was going to let me take as long as I liked.
"Yes," I said.
That was all.
Odessa put her red glasses back on.
"Finally," she said. "Somebody pass the licorice."
The foreman's wife was crying. The foreman was pretending he wasn't.
Clive's mother reached across the table, took the ring out of the filter, and put it on my finger herself.
It fit. It shouldn't have, and it did.
