Chapter 15: Salome
Keti's POV
The first snow came on a Thursday in December, and Salome Janelidze rang the doorbell in it.
I was in the kitchen with a tray of dough, fourteen weeks along and finally hungry.
Levan stood at the counter reading a wine label with his nose six inches from it.
Since the clinic in Manhattan he had stopped hiding the label from me, or the nose.
The bell rang a second time.
"I'll go," I said.
"I'll go with you," he said, and put the bottle down.
He followed me down the hall.
At the door he stopped behind me, close, so I felt the heat of him down my back.
I opened it.
Salome stood on the step with snow in her auburn hair and no hat and no gloves.
She wore her kindergarten coat, the green one with a wooden button missing.
She held her purse in both hands in front of her.
She was alone.
There was no car at the curb, no Janelidze driver, and no brother.
